A thriving business requires an owner who creates actionable plans for their business because your behavior and choices can impact business success. Ultimately, these two factors will decide whether you take a proactive or reactive approach to address issues that arise.

It’s critical that business owners understand the differences between these approaches because your response has a direct impact on the profitability of your business.

Proactive Approach

Take a proactive approach in business by preparing for various situations before they occur. A proactive approach ensures you’ve taken the proper risk mitigation actions before any issues develop. Being proactive ensures you can quickly strategize and resolve any concerns.

Here’s some ways to be proactive in business:

  • Facilitate regular team meetings

  • Leverage communication, project management apps, and communication tools to keep your team engaged:

    • Asana

    • ClickUp

    • Monday.com

    • Slack

    • Trello

  • Set and review business goals

  • Use a daily or weekly planner

Reactive Approach

Although you may be an excellent planner, you can’t prepare for everything. Despite all the planning that happens while running a business, situations will arise that won’t provide opportunities to prepare. However, if you find yourself in this situation, try the following:

  • Ask questions before assuming

  • Know your triggers

  • Take a deep breath

  • Clearly, being proactive is a more effective strategy than being reactive. However, when you experience reactive situations, use them to develop contingency processes and procedures for future issue resolution.

Stay ready so you don’t have to get ready. Start identifying proactive business strategies and consider the associated repercussions of responding proactively vs. reactively.
